Luma Changelog

Luma Changelog

Every version of Luma for iPhone and iPad, Luma for Mac and Luma Transfer, with new features, improvements and bug fixes.

Luma for iPhone & iPad 1.7 Latest

Released

New: Dynamic playlists

  • Playlists that fill themselves: you set rules, Luma finds the matching songs and keeps the list up to date. Rules cover genre, artist, album, year, plays, last played, date added, liked, format and length.
  • Songs can match all rules or just one. Optionally limited, for example to 50 random songs or the 100 most played. "Reshuffle" draws a new pick.
  • Create one with the "+" in the Playlists tab. While you edit, the editor shows how many songs match. A dynamic playlist can be converted into a regular one at any time, keeping its current songs. All the details: Dynamic playlists.
  • The automatic lists (Most Played, Recently Played, Recently Added, Liked) become dynamic playlists with this update, in your order. You can now adjust them yourself. The "By Genre" and "By Decade" overviews are gone; instead, create a dynamic playlist with a genre or year rule.
  • Under Settings › General › Playlists Tab they get their own row or share one list with your other playlists.
  • The backup includes dynamic playlists and their rules.

New: Light mode

  • Choose System, Light or Dark under Settings › Appearance. Dark stays the default, and the player always stays dark: Appearance.

Also

  • Collections get their own covers like playlists: mosaic, photo or pattern. How it works.
  • While music plays from a playlist or collection, its title turns green.
  • Search: swipe songs into the queue, in your history too. Remove history entries with the x.
  • Tapping outside a text field puts the keyboard away in the playlist, song and album editors.
  • The player opens much faster over long playlists, and its background is calmer.

Fixed

  • While a song you queued yourself is playing, the playlist is no longer marked as playing.

Luma for Mac 1.2.0 Latest

Released

New: Dynamic playlists

  • Playlists that fill themselves: you set rules, Luma finds the matching songs and keeps the list up to date. Rules cover genre, artist, album, year, plays, last played, date added, liked, format and length. Songs can match all rules or just one.
  • Optionally limited, for example to 50 random songs or the 100 most played. "Reshuffle" draws a new random pick.
  • Create one with the "+" at the bottom of the sidebar or "New" on the Playlists page. Right-click to edit the rules or to convert it into a regular playlist that keeps its current songs. All the details: Dynamic playlists.
  • Dynamic playlists have their own section above the other playlists, in the sidebar too. Under Settings › General you can show all playlists in one list instead.
  • The automatic lists of earlier versions (Most Played, Recently Played, Recently Added, Liked) become dynamic playlists with this update if you had them turned on. You can now adjust them yourself. Instead of "By Genre" and "By Decade", create a dynamic playlist with a genre or year rule.
  • The backup under Settings › Library includes dynamic playlists and their rules.

Sidebar

  • Rename, change the cover of and delete playlists and collections right in the sidebar, with a right-click: Sidebar.
  • Hover over a playlist or collection to get play and shuffle. While it plays, play becomes pause.
  • The playlist or collection that is playing is marked in the sidebar.
  • New "+" at the bottom of the sidebar for playlists, dynamic playlists and collections.

Also

  • Collections get their own covers like playlists: mosaic, your own image or a pattern.
  • The cover editor is now a proper Mac window. Choose an image, take one from Photos or just drop it onto the cover.
  • Adding albums to a collection opens a Mac window with search and checkboxes.
  • The settings window keeps the same size on every tab.

Fixed

  • A license is no longer lost when Polar is briefly unreachable or a network returns a wrong answer. If a license really is no longer active, the key stays saved and "Activate Again" unlocks Luma once more.
  • While a song you queued yourself is playing, Luma no longer shows the playlist as playing.
  • Deleting a playlist while its page is open now closes the page.

Luma Transfer 1.2.0 Latest

Released

Also

  • No new features. Luma Transfer ships together with Luma for Mac 1.2.0 and Luma 1.7 for iPhone and iPad.

Luma for iPhone & iPad 1.6

Released

New: iPhone Duo and iPad

  • Unfolded, Luma uses the large screen of the iPhone Duo: albums and playlists show the cover beside the title and buttons, the grid adapts to the width, and the player opens full screen with the cover beside the controls. Swipe down to close it.
  • On the iPad, the album grid, the player and the album, playlist, artist and collection pages get the same wide layout. On the large iPad, five albums fit side by side in portrait and seven in landscape. Narrow iPad windows keep the iPhone layout.
  • Lyrics fill the whole screen on the iPad and the unfolded Duo, with larger text.
  • The mini player stays centered there and is never wider than the player's column.
  • On the iPhone and the folded Duo, everything looks the same as before.

New: Technical Details

  • A song's format, sample rate, bit depth, bitrate and loudness, and for the playing song the signal path to the output device plus a live spectrogram.
  • Turn it on under Settings › Playback › Advanced, then open it from a song's menu or with the "Details" button in the player. What the values mean: Technical Details.

Lyrics

  • The lyrics view now ends in the player's scrubber, which you can drag to change the time, and the buttons for previous, play and next.
  • Lyrics come along from the Mac: if a lyrics file (.lrc, .elrc, .ttml or .txt) sits next to a song, Luma Transfer and Luma for Mac 1.1 and later send it with it. Songs already on your iPhone simply get their lyrics added.
  • Lyrics files are matched to the right song more reliably on import and in the “Luma” folder, and they take priority over lyrics in the tags.
  • When the next song starts, the note that there are no lyrics no longer flashes up.

Playlists and collections

  • New playlists open the song picker right away. Empty playlists get an "Add Songs" button, and the playlist's menu has the same entry.
  • The song and album pickers always show at the top how many items are selected, even after searching. The chevron next to the search field only hides the keyboard and keeps your search.
  • Collections are now sorted by year, oldest album first. Drag the albums into an order of your own and it stays. "Sort by Year" in the collection's menu brings the sorting back.

Also

  • Tap the Library or Playlists tab again and the page scrolls back to the top.

Luma for Mac 1.1.0

Released

New in Luma for Mac

  • Quick search from anywhere: ⌃⌥Space opens a search field over any app, even while Luma is in the background. ↩ plays the top hit, ⌥↩ plays it next, ⌘↩ shows it in Luma. You can change the shortcut under Settings › Playback › Quick Search: how it works.
  • Technical Details: a song's format, sample rate, bit depth, bitrate and loudness, and for the playing song the signal path to the output device plus a live spectrogram. Turn it on under Settings › Playback › Advanced, then right-click a song or use the button in the mini player: Technical Details.
  • Large cover in the mini player, under Settings › Appearance.
  • Volume control in the menu bar player.
  • New Dock menu: control playback, like the song, shuffle and repeat right from the Dock.
  • New playlists open the song picker right away. Empty playlists get an "Add Songs" button.
  • Collections are now sorted by year, oldest album first. Drag the albums into an order of your own and it stays. "Sort by Year" in the collection's menu brings the sorting back.
  • Rows you can drag show a grab hand.

Send to iPhone

  • Lyrics come along: if a lyrics file (.lrc, .elrc, .ttml or .txt) sits next to a song, it is sent with it. Songs already on the iPhone simply get their lyrics added. The iPhone needs Luma 1.6 for this.
  • Lyrics files are also matched to the right song more reliably on import, and they take priority over lyrics in the tags.

Fixed

  • The mini player looks the same when the window is not in front.
  • The search field responds to the first trackpad click.
  • The app icon picker follows every click.
  • A reopened window shows the albums at the right size at once. The menu bar player brings back a minimized window instead of opening a second one.
  • Lyrics and Technical Details no longer show through the tip of the popover.

Luma Transfer 1.1.0

Released

Send to iPhone

  • Lyrics come along: if a lyrics file (.lrc, .elrc, .ttml or .txt) sits next to a song, it is sent with it. Songs already on the iPhone simply get their lyrics added. The iPhone needs Luma 1.6 for this.

Luma for iPhone & iPad 1.5.1

Released

Receive music from your Mac

  • Large transfers now run smoothly, even with thousands of songs.
  • New overview at the top: how many songs have arrived, percentage, progress bar and time left. It stays in place while you scroll.
  • The list follows the song that is arriving. If you scroll yourself, "Go to Current Song" brings you back.
  • If the connection drops, the transfer no longer gets stuck. What has arrived is kept, and sending again only transfers what is still missing.

New: Backup

  • In Settings › Library & Storage › Backup you save playlists, collections, likes and listening stats in one file. Music files are not included. What exactly is inside: Export and backup.
  • To restore, import your music first, then the file. Stats and likes find their songs again, even if the files are new. Importing twice doesn't create duplicates.
  • Exporting and importing all playlists moved here from the Playlists tab. Single playlists can still be exported from their context menu.

Also

  • Importing a playlist again no longer adds songs twice when their info has changed.
  • English texts now say "1 album" instead of "1 albums".

Send to iPhone

  • New overview at the top: how many songs have arrived, percentage, progress bar and time left.
  • The list follows the song that is being sent.
  • If the connection drops, the transfer no longer gets stuck. Sending again only transfers what is still missing.

Also

  • The hand cursor on albums, playlists and collections appears right away.
  • English texts now say "1 album" instead of "1 albums".

Luma for iPhone & iPad 1.5

Released

Luma for iPhone and iPad is now free on the App Store.

New: Receive music from your Mac

  • Send music from your Mac straight into Luma, over your Wi-Fi or a USB cable. No servers and no cloud.
  • On the Mac you need the free app Luma Transfer or Luma for Mac. Drag in albums, folders or your whole music collection.
  • In Luma, tap Import Music › From Mac. You confirm every transfer on your iPhone before anything arrives.
  • Songs you already have are skipped before they are sent. If there isn't enough storage, Luma tells you up front.

New: Export your library

  • In Settings › Library & Storage you can copy your whole library, with readable folder and file names, to a folder of your choice.

Playback

  • Albums and playlists scroll along with the playing song, as long as you aren't looking somewhere else.
  • Seeking all the way to the end now finishes the song instead of starting it over.
  • When the next track follows directly on the album, you get a gapless transition instead of a crossfade.
  • After a call or another interruption, music only resumes if it was actually playing before.
  • If the playing song is deleted, playback continues with the next one.
  • Sleep timer “End of Track”: the same song no longer starts again afterwards.
  • The player closes once nothing is playing anymore.

Queue

  • “Clear” only removes the upcoming tracks, the music keeps playing.
  • Clearer wording: “Play Next” adds to the queue, “Next Track” skips.

Also

  • New in Settings: Luma for Mac.
  • An empty library now has an “Import Music” button right there.
  • Renaming an album to the name of an existing album merges the two.
  • Lyrics in older text encodings are read correctly.
  • English translation completed, texts revised.
  • Lots of small fixes for playback, the queue and importing.

New

  • Sends music from your Mac to Luma on iPhone and iPad, even without Luma for Mac.
  • Over Wi-Fi or USB cable, with no server and no cloud. You confirm every transfer on your iPhone.
  • Free. Needs Luma 1.5 or later on iPhone or iPad.
  • Updates itself. Checking for updates can be turned off in Settings.
  • Runs on macOS 26 and later. Guide: Luma Transfer.

Luma for iPhone & iPad 1.4.1

Released

1.4 was withdrawn before release, so this lists everything new since 1.3.

New: Collections

  • Group whole albums into collections, such as every album by one artist, from one genre or one era. Collections live in the Playlists tab. You can reorder them, rename them and pin them to the home screen.
  • “Add to Collection” is right in every album’s menu.

New: The Luma folder in the Files app

  • Put music or whole folders into Files › On My iPhone › Luma, or drag them in from a Mac in the Finder. Luma imports them automatically as soon as the app is open, then tidies the folder up so nothing takes up space twice.
  • “Share Audio File” for songs, albums, artists and playlists: send them via AirDrop or save them to the Files app.

Search

  • Much faster, even with large collections.
  • History: recently opened results appear below the empty search field. Swipe to remove an entry, or turn history off in Settings.
  • If you like, the keyboard comes up as soon as you open the Search tab.
  • Tapping next to the search field puts the keyboard away.

Queue

  • The queue is split in two: “Added by You” and “Then Automatically”, so you see at a glance what you queued yourself.
  • “Play Last” puts songs after the other songs you added, still ahead of the rest of the album. Shuffling leaves them where they are.

Editing info

  • Changes to title, artist, album and more are now also written into the music file (MP3, M4A/ALAC and FLAC).
  • Artist and album artist are separate fields, plus the disc number. Songs with featured artists stay in their album when you edit them.
  • Albums show the artist under every track (can be turned off in Settings › Appearance).

Library & lyrics

  • Sorted by artist, an artist’s albums appear in release order. When sorting by release year, albums without a year go last.
  • Synced lyrics are now also picked up from .elrc and .ttml files next to the song. If there are several, the synced one wins.

Storage

  • New: Settings › Library & Storage › Storage Used lists all albums by size. Swipe an album left to delete it.
  • Luma frees up space left behind by interrupted imports: leftover copies of songs are removed automatically.

Backup

  • Your music is now fully included in your device’s iCloud Backup, so every song plays again after a restore. Depending on the size of your collection, the backup needs more iCloud storage. To exclude Luma, go to iOS Settings: your name › iCloud › iCloud Backup.

Also

  • Clearer Settings: General, Playback, Appearance, Library & Storage.
  • New: “Help & Feedback” in Settings.
  • Complete English translation.
  • Bug fixes for playback and volume normalization.

Luma for iPhone & iPad 1.3

Released

New: Lyrics

  • Luma shows lyrics from the music file or from an .lrc or .txt file next to the song. The Lyrics button only appears for songs that have lyrics.
  • Synced lyrics follow along line by line. Tap a line to jump to that spot.

New: Normalize volume

  • Every song plays at the same loudness, wherever it came from. Luma measures loudness in the background and only raises quiet tracks as far as they go without clipping.
  • On by default; turn it off in Settings under Playback.

Import

  • Large imports finish reliably: further imports are queued, and locking the screen no longer stops an import.
  • Imports can be cancelled. Afterwards you see per file what was imported, what was already there and what failed, with the reason.
  • The same song from a different folder is recognized and not imported twice.
  • “Open in Luma”: Luma shows up when you share audio files. On iPad, drag files and folders right in.
  • New formats: AIFF, M4B and CAF.
  • Songs without tags take their title from the file name, like “Artist - Title.mp3”. FLAC and Opus files now reliably bring their title, artist and album.

Covers

  • Your own covers for albums and single songs, from Photos or the Files app.
  • Cover corners square or rounded, your choice.
  • Covers embedded in FLAC files are now recognized.

Using Luma

  • A short confirmation for every action, like “Added to queue”.
  • A long press on albums, playlists and artists opens the same menu as the three dots.
  • Artist pages show their albums as a gallery.
  • Pinned playlists can be reordered on the home screen.
  • New: the “Swipe gesture” setting decides what a full swipe across a song does.

Queue & shuffle

  • Tapping a song plays the list in order. Only “Shuffle” starts it mixed.
  • “Next” moves on to the next song even under “Repeat Track”, and “Previous” wraps to the last one under “Repeat All”.
  • “Play Next” and “Add to Queue” start playback when nothing is playing.
  • Removing a song from the queue removes just that one entry.

Faster

  • Play and pause respond instantly, and switching songs is much quicker.
  • Large libraries scroll more smoothly, and Luma uses less power while playing.

Luma for iPhone & iPad 1.2

Released

New: Playlist covers

  • Design each playlist’s cover: a mosaic of its album covers, your own photo, or a generated design in your color, with the playlist name if you like.

Library & playlists

  • Playlists can be renamed.
  • Search now finds playlists too.
  • “Show Album” and “Show Artist” in the player open the page right in the library.
  • When you change an album’s genre, its songs follow, and so do the smart playlists.
  • Empty playlists and lists show a hint instead of a blank page.
  • The action bar for selecting several songs is no longer hidden.

Playback

  • No more crash when you plug in wired headphones or connect to your car and then tap Play.
  • Play after pause works reliably over AirPods, headsets and the Lock Screen.
  • Cross-fades without crackling, even if you open the queue during one.
  • Tapping “Next” quickly several times no longer skips extra songs.
  • The time on the Lock Screen stays in sync.
  • Better VoiceOver labels in the player.

Luma for iPhone & iPad 1.1

Released

New: Gapless, cross-fade, equalizer

  • Gapless playback: live albums and concept records play without a pause between songs.
  • Cross-fade between songs, adjustable.
  • 10-band equalizer with presets. When it’s off, Luma plays your music untouched.

New: Smart playlists

  • Most Played, Recently Played, Recently Added, Liked, by genre and by decade. The lists keep themselves up to date.
  • Show or hide each list and drag them into order. Inside a list, filter by genre or decade.

New: Sleep timer

  • Stops the music after 5 to 90 minutes or at the end of the song, with a gentle fade at the end.

New: Back up playlists

  • Export your playlists to a file and import them again after a reinstall. Missing songs show up as placeholders and reconnect once the music is back.

Home & playlists

  • Customize the home screen: albums as a grid or list, hide “Recently Added”, pin playlists to the top.
  • Drag playlists into your own order.
  • Select several songs and add them to a playlist or like them in one go.
  • Five app icons to choose from: green, graphite, light, blue and violet.

Playback

  • Luma remembers your queue and position and picks up where you left off after a restart.
  • “Mix” in the queue reshuffles only the upcoming songs.
  • Play/pause and the scrubber on the Lock Screen stay in sync.
  • A song counts as played once you’ve actually listened to it, not only at the very end.

Faster & more stable

  • Smooth even with large libraries of 1,500 songs and more.
  • Fixed crashes when deleting songs. Deleting the song that’s playing closes the player.
  • Delete confirmations appear in the middle of the screen, and the import sheet closes by itself after a successful import.
