Collections
Playlists & Collections, updated
A collection is like a playlist, but made of whole albums instead of single songs. Use it to bundle every album by one artist, a genre, or your favorite albums for a Sunday afternoon.
Collection or playlist?
| Playlist | Collection | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains | Single songs | Whole albums |
| Good for | Mixes, moods, favorite songs | Discographies, genres, album nights |
| New songs on an album | You add them yourself | Come along automatically, since the whole album is in |
Collections appear in the Playlists tab as their own row, between the dynamic playlists and your playlists.
Create a collection
There are two ways:
In the Playlists tab
- New CollectionTap + at the top and choose New Collection. If you don't have any collections yet, tapping the New Collection row works too.
- Enter a nameand confirm with Create.
- Add albumsOpen the empty collection and tap Add Albums. Tap the albums you want and confirm with Done.
Straight from an album
Touch and hold an album in the library and choose Add to Collection. It lists all your collections plus New Collection…, which creates a new one with this album right away.
Tutorial: Every album by an artist or genre at once
The album picker has a search. That lets you build a big collection in seconds:
- Open Add AlbumsIn the collection, tap Add Albums.
- SearchType an artist, an album or a genre, for example “Jazz”. The list now shows only matching albums.
- Select allTap Select All. All matching albums go into the collection.
- DoneLuma places new albums by their year. If you've put the collection in your own order, they go at the end.
The genre search is only as good as your albums' tags. Add missing genres with Edit Album Info.
Playing
In an open collection, or by touching and holding the collection, you have three options:
| Action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Play | All albums one after another, in the collection's order, each album from start to finish. |
| Shuffle | All songs of all albums, mixed up. |
| Shuffle Albums | The albums in random order, but each album in one piece. Ideal for an album night. |
Via the menu (•••) you can also queue the whole collection with Play Next or Play Last.
Order of the albums
Since Luma 1.6, a collection's albums are sorted by year, oldest first. Albums without a year come last. That way a discography plays in the right order by itself.
If you want a different order, drag the albums into place under Edit. That order then stays. Sort by Year in the collection's menu (•••) brings back the sorting by year. It works the same way on the Mac.
Editing
In the menu (•••) of an open collection:
- Add Albums: select or deselect albums.
- Edit: drag the albums by their handle into an order of your own.
- Sort by Year: appears once you've set your own order, and sorts by year again.
- Rename: give it a new name.
- Change cover: see below.
- Delete Collection: the collection goes away, the albums stay in your library.
To take out a single album, touch and hold it inside the collection and choose Remove from Collection. If you delete an album from the library entirely, it automatically disappears from every collection too.
The order of the collections in the Playlists tab can be changed just like playlists.
Designing the cover
Since Luma 1.7, collections get their own covers, just like playlists. Change cover offers a mosaic of the album covers, a photo of your own or a generated pattern. On the Mac, right-click the collection, in the sidebar too, and choose Change cover. There you choose an image, take one from Photos or just drop it onto the cover.
Pin to the home screen
Like playlists, collections can be pinned to the top of the library's home screen: Settings › General › Home, then pick them under Pin Playlists and Collections and sort them by their handle.
Showing and hiding collections
In Settings › General › Playlists Tab:
- Show Collections: turns the feature on or off. When hidden, collections disappear from the Playlists tab, the album menus and the home screen. Nothing is deleted; turn them back on and all your collections are there again.
- Top of the Playlists Tab: whether your playlists or your collections come right below the dynamic playlists.
Since Luma 1.5.1, collections are part of the Luma Data backup under Settings › Library & Storage › Backup. When you import it, Luma finds the albums again by title and album artist. Albums that aren't in your library yet are left out until you read in the file again after importing the music. Collections are also backed up with your device's iCloud or computer backup like everything else.
